Week 13 of 2024 from Thread Head

I finished sewing the quilted jacket!

This was made using a heavily modified Lutterloh pattern (#77 from supplement #320 - a vintage pattern that I made a French Terry jacket with a while ago). I removed the collar from the pattern.
Increased the centre fronts so I would have room for buttons and buttons holes.
Also made the sleeves longer and narrower. To finish the seams on the jacket I used an overlocker/serger, but I covered the seams for about 6" on the sleeves, so that they would look nice when folded back.
The bias binding on the jacket was ...

Week 10 of 2024 from Thread Head

This past week I started a quilted jacket -

This was a medallion quilt top that I made over 6 years ago. I wasn't really happy with it and I knew that it probably needed more, but I didn't think I would like it any better. I would pull it out occasionally to try to think what to do with it, then put it away. It was the only quilt top that I have made that didn't get quilted as soon as it was finished. After seeing so many quilted jackets recently I thought this would be perfect ...

My Quilted Jacket from Fret Not Yourself

Figure out who you are, then do it on purpose.
~Dolly Parton

Quilting

Finished in time for cooler weather. The flannel batting was very difficult to seam and makes the jacket cooler to wear. Or perhaps the open neck makes it cooler. I like the shawl collar and it wasn't that hard to sew. Horizontal lines are matched on the sleeves; I didn't worry about matching each block of the Chain.

I started by planning the front then matched the same location at the seams as I moved to the back and sleeves. It worked pretty well.

My ...

Still Working on my Quilted Jacket from Fret Not Yourself

Whoever said life was about the journey and not the destination never had to look for a place to park.
~ Henry Grabar

Quilting

My sister finally visited me. Usually I visit her. What a wonderful week we had: butterfly pavilion, arboretum, choral recital, lots of meals with extended family… and the Quilt Festival. Lovely although smaller than previous years. We also worked on a shirt for her. Now she’s on her way home but we’re planning future visits.

Before she arrived I worked on my jacket. Each pattern piece has it's own translucent paper template that allows ...

Quilt Jacket Progress from Fret Not Yourself

A grandmother pretends she doesn't know who you are on Halloween.
~Erma Bombeck

Quilting

Many, many pieces have been moved but it seems to be working out now. The design centers horizontally on the back although I'm thinking about exactly where that piece will fall vertically. To the right is the right front. It's lining up to "semi-match" at the side seam.

With the right front pieces sewed, I can decide where to position the pattern piece. That big notch near the top left is where the shawl collar attaches to the shoulder. In order to avoid ...

A Quilted Jacket of My Own from Fret Not Yourself

Listen! the wind is rising,
and the air is wild with leaves.
We have had our summer evenings,
now for October eves!
~Humbert Wolfe

Finally! Some rain in southeast Texas. The whole area is exceptional - the highest/worst level of drought. A few weeks ago some rain fell east and west of us. It was hard not to be envious but the entire western Gulf needs moisture desperately. And, a cold front came through that dropped our temperatures {briefly} to the upper 70s {25 C for you logical people.} Still wearing shorts and sandals; typical for Houston.

Exciting News!! from From My Carolina Home

It was exciting to get the mail this week, as I got some great news! Last summer we did a quilt along to make quilted jackets to wear during this winter season. It took three months to finish the jacket, just in time to enter it into the Mountain State Fair. It won a first place and Best of Show.

The purse and accessories won a first place and Judge’s Choice at the fair as well.

My friend Mary talked me into applying for entry into the Mancuso Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in the Wearable Arts category, which meant I ...

The Quilted Coat Finish from Fret Not Yourself

Photo heavy post.

Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else.
~J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

Quilted Coat

All that angst. Years of worry and insecurity for nothing. This was a piece of cake. As Barrie wrote, it wasn't work at all because there was nothing I'd rather have done.

Quilted coat, front view

Here's the side view. DS wanted the sleeves to turn up like this. He says it will keep his hands warm when he walks the dog. I say, that's what gloves are for. Still, his choice.

Quilted Coat Construction from Fret Not Yourself

It's hard to beat a person who never gives up.

Quilting

Channeling the Babe, I just keep moving forward with the jacket. Well, mainly forward. Lots of redos. The muslin fit DS decently. I think the body is a bit loose but he likes it that way. The sheet used for the muslin is so old he had to be very careful putting it on and off. The shoulder dart could be extended half an inch, the sleeves need another couple of inches, and the jacket will be shortened four inches. {Currently it hits a bit above ...

A Quilted Coat from Fret Not Yourself

Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So, love the people who treat you right, forgive the ones who don't, and believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said it'd be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

Five years ago my younger son asked me to make him a quilted coat. I just looked at him. What? Well, it didn't need to be a coat; he'd like a poncho. What ...

Finishing the Quilted Jacket Ensemble from From My Carolina Home

My friend, Mary (from Inside Stori), has talked me into entering my quilted jacket into the wearable art competition at the Mancuso Mid-Atlantic show. She encouraged me to complete the extra pieces and enter the full ensemble category. Well, I really didn’t want to spend money on fabric for pieces I would likely not ever wear, but in the back of my mind I thought I might have some black fabric in the stash. It took a bit of searching, but I found it, and it was perfect. It is a dressmaker weight cotton/poly blend, and I had ...

Quilted Jacket Sew Along – Extras! from From My Carolina Home

The jacket was done, and I just could not bring myself to throw away the bits left over from the pattern cutting step. This doesn’t look like much, but I just had to figure out something to do with these. Settle in for a long and picture heavy post as I finish everything left. Now, note that all these pieces are quilted already, so sewing them together in the traditional way would be problematic. But ever one to relish a challenge, I had an idea.

I straightened the edges, leaving the angles, and placed the pieces up against each ...

Quilted Jacket Sew Along – Finishing from From My Carolina Home

At this point, the jacket is assembled, and the inside seams are covered. Today we’ll get to the last finishing details. The edges of the jacket and sleeves need binding, and I began with the sleeves. I measured the total length needed, and made a binding exactly that length in a tube. I turned the sleeves inside out so I could sew the binding to the outside easier.

Sew the binding with about a 3/8-inch depth. I think just a bit more than the quarter inch usual for a quilt just looks better.

Turn the binding to the ...

Quilted Jacket Sew Along – Assembly and Fitting from From My Carolina Home

This week we get to the part many sewing artists dread, assembly and fitting a garment. Truly, this isn’t hard, as long as you take it one step at a time, and just go carefully. Don’t rush trying to get done, that is when you make mistakes and get frustrated, especially when sewing in sleeves. When we left off last week, the pattern was being cut out of the quilted pieces of fabric. Here is my right and left front.

Assembly is pretty simple, two shoulder seams, two side seams, and the sleeves. I pinned the sleeves for ...

Quilted Jacket Sew Along – Quilting from From My Carolina Home

With all the fabrics cut to size for the pattern pieces, I loaded the longarm with the backing, added Dream Orient batting, and arranged the fabric pieces on top. I’ll quilt these in black thread, and the right front fabric will be done in blue thread as it is lighter. I’m using Sulky Rayon Thread for the shine it will add to the project.

Quilting on your domestic machine can be done with straight lines or freehand designs, doing one piece at a time. I would recommend quilting your fabric first, rather than cutting out the pattern pieces ...

Quilted Jacket Sew Along – Creating the Patchwork from From My Carolina Home

This week we get started. For those who missed the previous posts, this sew along began with a trip to Macy’s and the discovery that quilted patchwork was back in style. See my post Quilted Jackets Return to Fashion. Then, the McCalls Quilting September October 2022 issue featured Quilted Coats! That issue is available for your Kindle reader or print version. We talked about doing the sew along in Quilty Chat, and the comments were positive. So, it seemed a sew along would be fun. Here is the timeline:
Week 1 – choose pattern, create fabric – today, August 2

A Bit of Sewing Time from From My Carolina Home

I finally had a day to spend in the sewing room, and I made some headway on the jacket project. One thing I had to do was to buy two yards of fabric. I didn’t have enough of the pretty blue, purple and black fabrics to make the whole jacket. Looking around my local shops, nothing went well with them. The black is a deep, rich black, and the other black fabrics just didn’t have that depth. So, on to the internet, and I found one yard at two spots, and bought both. I want to be able ...

Nova Coat Pattern + Rifle Paper Co. Fabric = New Favorite! from Tea Rose Home

I think it was about two years ago that I purchased the Wildwood fabric by Rifle Paper Co. I love it so much that it was sitting on my table for a while and every time when I walked by, I looked at it, touched it and thought about what to make with it. A tunic, a top, a skirt??? I didn't want to mess it up or didn't want to regret not making something else after I used it. My indecisiveness was in full swing and I had to put it on the shelf and wait.

After ...
