It was exciting to get the mail this week, as I got some great news! Last summer we did a quilt along to make quilted jackets to wear during this winter season. It took three months to finish the jacket, just in time to enter it into the Mountain State Fair. It won a first place and Best of Show.
The purse and accessories won a first place and Judge’s Choice at the fair as well.
My friend Mary talked me into applying for entry into the Mancuso Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in the Wearable Arts category, which meant I ...

My friend, Mary (from Inside Stori), has talked me into entering my quilted jacket into the wearable art competition at the Mancuso Mid-Atlantic show. She encouraged me to complete the extra pieces and enter the full ensemble category. Well, I really didn’t want to spend money on fabric for pieces I would likely not ever wear, but in the back of my mind I thought I might have some black fabric in the stash. It took a bit of searching, but I found it, and it was perfect. It is a dressmaker weight cotton/poly blend, and I had ...

This doesn’t look like much, but I just had to figure out something to do with these. Settle in for a long and picture heavy post as I finish everything left. Now, note that all these pieces are quilted already, so sewing them together in the traditional way would be problematic. But ever one to relish a challenge, I had an idea.
I straightened the edges, leaving the angles, and placed the pieces up against each ...

The edges of the jacket and sleeves need binding, and I began with the sleeves. I measured the total length needed, and made a binding exactly that length in a tube. I turned the sleeves inside out so I could sew the binding to the outside easier.
Sew the binding with about a 3/8-inch depth. I think just a bit more than the quarter inch usual for a quilt just looks better.
Turn the binding to the ...
read moreThis week we get to the part many sewing artists dread, assembly and fitting a garment. Truly, this isn’t hard, as long as you take it one step at a time, and just go carefully. Don’t rush trying to get done, that is when you make mistakes and get frustrated, especially when sewing in sleeves. When we left off last week, the pattern was being cut out of the quilted pieces of fabric. Here is my right and left front.
Assembly is pretty simple, two shoulder seams, two side seams, and the sleeves. I pinned the sleeves for ...
read moreWith all the fabrics cut to size for the pattern pieces, I loaded the longarm with the backing, added Dream Orient batting, and arranged the fabric pieces on top. I’ll quilt these in black thread, and the right front fabric will be done in blue thread as it is lighter. I’m using Sulky Rayon Thread for the shine it will add to the project.
Quilting on your domestic machine can be done with straight lines or freehand designs, doing one piece at a time. I would recommend quilting your fabric first, rather than cutting out the pattern pieces ...

See my post Quilted Jackets Return to Fashion. Then, the McCalls Quilting September October 2022 issue featured Quilted Coats! That issue is available for your Kindle reader or print version. We talked about doing the sew along in Quilty Chat, and the comments were positive. So, it seemed a sew along would be fun. Here is the timeline:

I finally had a day to spend in the sewing room, and I made some headway on the jacket project. One thing I had to do was to buy two yards of fabric. I didn’t have enough of the pretty blue, purple and black fabrics to make the whole jacket. Looking around my local shops, nothing went well with them. The black is a deep, rich black, and the other black fabrics just didn’t have that depth. So, on to the internet, and I found one yard at two spots, and bought both. I want to be able ...
